    Acne

Most people are quite familiar with acne and the many emotional challenges it presents.
Acne could aptly be described as an inflammatory condition characterized by whiteheads,
blackheads, and pimples (zits). While acne lesions occur more frequently on the face, the
body is not immune with lesions showing up virtually anywhere (back, buttocks, chest,
shoulders, neck, legs etc…). Whiteheads are small, hard, painless, white blemishes which
tend to show up on the cheeks, nose, and chin. Blackheads on the other hand are made
up of dried body oils and dead skin cells, while pimples contain pus. In some cases, deeper,
lesions similar in appearance to boils are present.

    Causes

Ironically there is still some debate as to what actually causes acne,
with some believing that acne is caused by such self inflicted behaviors
as poor hygiene and rich food. While these factors may contribute to
acne most research points to the fact that acne being caused by
    hormonal influences and imbalances.

While acne can occur at any age it is most common during the adolescent and teenage years.
At the onset of sexual maturity, both males and females secrete increased amounts of hormones
called androgens, which over stimulate and enlarge the sebaceous glands (oil glands) in the skin.

Severe acne is more often experienced by teenage boys, though girls are not immune to its
painful ravages. The most  likely reason for this is because boys have higher levels of those
pesky androgen hormones; specifically testosterone. But just because boys tend to experience
the severe variety more often that doesn’t necessarily make it a bigger problem once the
emotional and psychological impacts are factored in.

An oily substance called sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands. Once secreted sebum
then works its way to the surface of the skin through the small openings referred to as pores.
When an overabundance of sebum is present, the pores can become clogged, causing bacteria
to multiply in tiny blocked channels. The result is a pimple which in its rawest form is nothing more
than an inflamed clogged pore filled with pus.

Acne outbreaks that last into adulthood are often aggravated by factors such as stress, menstrual
periods, or the use of a myriad of medications such as corticosteroids.

Pimples at any age are no laughing matter and can affect self image and lead to lack of self
confidence, embarrassment, anxiety, societal withdrawal, hopelessness, and even depression.

While most cases of acne are nothing more than a temporary emotionally draining harmless
nuisance, occasionally acne outbreaks can lead to permanent damage to the skin. This permanent
skin damage is generally referred to as acne scarring. It is also important to point out that once
scarring occurs it is very difficult to reverse due to the permanent chances which have occurred
    in skin cell structure.

    10 Self-Help Tips For Acne

    * Acne tends to decrease with exposure to sun or ultraviolet light but many dermatologist
