    Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is also referred to as onychomycosis, and is caused by tiny
fungus or organisms that can be easily contracted almost anywhere.

If you have it, you can take some comfort in knowing you are not the only one.
A recent study found that over fifteen million people in America are currently struggling
to manage this embarrassing condition, and an estimated four million in Canada.

Nail fungus infections are really hard to spot earlier on. These types of infections only become obvious
when they are fully established under the nails. Nail infections initially appear as a tiny yellow spot which
gradually spreads until it infects all parts of the nail. After that a burgeoning fungal nail infection will
generally spread to all the other toes and finger nails. It is very easy for the fungus to survive in the
nails because it is a very habitable environment for it to grow in. This is because most people wear
covered shoes that are not aerated or use nail polishes which seal in moisture.

Please note that nail fungus infections are infectious and can spread from one person to the other!

These infections can be spread by sharing the same bathroom, public shower stalls, wet saunas,
and locker rooms. These places are usually moist with patrons tending to walk around barefooted. The
fungus is deposited on the floor or tile by the donor just waiting for an opportunity to latch on to a bare
    foot or fingernail bed.

Fungal nail infections can also be contracted from nail files and emery boards. For this reason caution
combined with proper hygiene should be used when sharing your nail files are shared with others. Nail
salons are also a common breeding ground and should be vented thoroughly before taking on a chance
of contracting an infection which could turn into a re-curring life long problem.

Additionally, when walking around bare footed take the time to put on a pair of flip flops or pool shoes.

Seven Signs You Have A Nail Infection

One or more of the signs below indicate the presence
    of a nail infection :

    * Thickened
    * Brittle, crumbly or ragged
    * Distorted in shape
    * Dull, with no luster or shine
*A dark color, caused by debris building up under your nail
*Infected nails may also separate from the nail bed, a condition called onycholysis.
*You may even feel pain in your toes or fingertips and detect a slightly foul odor.

Curing Nail Fungus Causes and Cures

When attempting to eliminate a fungal nail infection the infected area must be kept clean and dry,
and exposed to as much fresh air and sunlight as possible.

The toenails seem to be the area of most vulnerability. Some of the reasons for this are wearing
shoes that are tied too tight, sweaty or damp shoes, prolonged exposure to foot moisture, or
borrowing contaminated nail cutters and other tools from others.

One example of putting your toe nails at risk would be wearing old shoes to mow the lawn or work
in the yard during the warm weather months. Trauma is another common cause. If one of your nail
is injured it can open the door for infection.

Those with a weakened immune system due to aging, illness, or disease have an above average
chance of contracting a nail infection and are commonly plagued by recurring infections.

Once it occurs in one toenail it will likely spread to other nails if not treated promptly.

There are numerous types of medications for treating this condition that run the gamut in both
application method, harshness, and form of treatment (i.e. Prescriptions, herbs, oils, creams, etc...).

Some medicines can cause side effects and are especially dangerous for those suffering from liver
and/or related diseases. Some can cause allergies because of their high toxicity.

Curing nail fungus has a success rate of between 60–80 percent, but their is no long-term guarantee
that it will not return at some point. In fact, one average there is a one in five chance of re-occurrence.
This is why after initially treating the condition many doctors will recommend their patients continue to
    use anti-fungal creams.

The best way to keep your nails healthy and avoid nail infection is to pay close attention to
good hygiene and never let your guard down.

Five steps to prevent fungal nail infection:

*The first is, wear open footwear as much as possible especially in damp, moist areas.

*Second, change socks immediately if your feet becomes damp. Wearing absorbent socks
    is also a good idea.

*Third, don’t wear high top boots unless absolutely necessary.

*Fourth, never wear old work or yard shoes.

*Fourth, treat any possible infection as early as possible to stop it from spreading.
