    Thyroid

The thyroid is essential to balancing a number of body functions
most of which are essential for optimal health and wellness. The
gland itself is situated just below the Adam’s apple, the shape
of which looks much like a butterfly having two halves or lobes.

The thyroid gland is responsible for releasing hormones vital to
many bodily functions such as body temperature, fertility, organ
function, puberty, metabolism, and physical growth and
development. These functions depend on two hormones released
from the thyroid gland: tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

When the body fails to produce enough hormones it is known as hypothyroidism whereas too
much is known as hyperthyroidism. Maintaining healthy levels of thyroid hormones plays a very
important role in the body and in varying degrees influences the function of all organs. Thyroid
hormones also determine how fast or how slow the organs should work and when the body
    systems uses energy.

Thyroid Disorders – Who Is At Risk

Both men and women depend equally on a healthy thyroid for any number of important body
functions. That said, women seem to be more susceptible to thyroid problems than men. Even
seemingly insignificant variations in thyroid hormone levels can have serious consequences –
    particularly for your heart.

    Arriving at a Diagnosis

A blood sample analysis is the universally accepted screening method for any thyroid disorder.
A blood analysis will determine the levels of T4 and T3 providing a snapshot into how well the
    thyroid gland is functioning.

If your medical professional believes further test are needed, he or she may administer a radioactive
iodine uptake test. While the name of this test seems freighting it actually is considered to be quite safe
and will not harm the thyroid. Twenty four hours after the iodine is given special equipment will be used
to measure the amount of radioactivity over the thyroid gland.

Thyroid tests can often come back normal or sub clinical even though the thyroid is not functioning
as it should be and all the symptoms of hypothyroidism are experienced. The reason for this is because
a normal result on tests only indicates that the thyroid functioning falls within the average or slightly
    below average range.

Because thyroid function can differ from person to person, what may be considered normal for one
person is not always the case for the next person. This is the reason why the results of any thyroid
test must always be seen in more of a big picture view taking into account the symptoms experienced
    by the patient.

Individuals who have keen sense as to what is happening in/with their bodies can be of great help to
their doctor during the diagnostic process.

    Once diagnosed what’s next?

Once the causes of a thyroid disorder has been discovered and diagnosed the next step is settling
on the proper treatment. This determination will be very much based on the type of thyroid disorder.
There are three main segments of conventional medical thyroid treatment – prescription medications
such as Synthroid, radioactive iodine therapy, and surgery.

Generally thyroid disorders are life-long conditions with most being relatively easy to manage.
That said, complications can occur if they are ignored, left untreated, or if the incorrect treatment
    is used.

There are many herbal and holistic alternative treatment options currently available for sufferers
in addition to the conventional methods listed above. In most cases conventional treatments only
provide partial relief to patients which has given rise to the popularity of  alternative and natural
    treatments.

Holistic and natural treatment programs can help overcome a variety of thyroid conditions and
symptoms. The combination of homeopathic and herbal remedies generally has a low risk of side
effects, is effective, and is safe to use.

The combination of a thyroid supportive diet plan, exercise, yoga, herbal and homeopathic remedies,
and other mind-body therapies has proven to be a winning holistic combination for those facing the
undeniable challenges associated with thyroid disorders.

Remember, natural remedies are not right for everyone so be sure and talk to your medical
professional before deciding what treatment option is right for you.
