Anxiety - Uneasiness, Dread, Loss, Uncertainty and/or Fear

You are not alone! Anxiety is the most common mental disorder
worldwide with virtually everyone experiences some anxiety from
time to time. Preparing for that final exam, job stress, or marital
challenges are just a few examples or stressful events that produce
anxiety.  Although it's normal to feel anxious from time to time, if you
feel anxious without reason and if these worries are too intense or
persist too long they can, and often do, affect your day-to-day life.
The anxiety disorder most often diagnosed is
generalized anxiety disorder.
Common symptoms associated with
GAD are restlessness, feeling tense or
on edge, irritability, impatience, and poor concentration.
Anxiety can be described as a general felling of
uneasiness, dread, uncertainty, and fear in response
to or in anticipation of a real or imagined threat.
The physical symptoms of anxiety can include a
racing heart, palpitations, light headedness,
hyperventilation, appetite loss, diarrhea,urinary
frequency, hesitancy, sweating, enlarged pupils,
tremors, poor attention span, headache, sexual
difficulty, irritability, sleeplessness (insomnia), fatigue,
nightmares, dry mouth, diarrhea, or difficulty swallowing.

Causes

Anxiety can have many different causes,
including the threat itself; general physical
and emotional stress, which is worsened by
fatigue and overwork; grief over, for example,
    the death of a loved one or the loss of a job;
a number of drugs including caffeine, decongestants, asthma inhalers
(bronchodilators), and thyroid supplements; withdrawal from addictive drugs; poor
diet; or an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), stroke, Parkinson disease,
heart disease, or emphysema.

Your general run of the mill mild anxiety is a common and natural response
to stress that abates when the stress trigger is removed. Anxiety becomes
a medical problem requiring treatment if it consistently interferes with the
person’s day to day performance.

When discussing ones anxiety, you may hear any one of many different
descriptions including:

*I’m lonely. I’ve always been very shy.  I want friends, but I’m too embarrassed
to call anyone. I guess I feel like anyone I call will think I’m not worth talking to.

* When my panic attack begins, I feel tightness in my chest. It’s as though I’m
drowning, suffocating, and I begin to sweat; the fear is overwhelming. I feel like
I’m going to die, and I have to sit down because I might faint.

*It’s hard to describe how I’m feeling; I just can’t seem to put it into words. It’s
kind of like dread and doom but a thousand times worse. I want to scream or
cry for help, but I’m paralyzed. I just can’t imagine feeling any worse.

*I wake up with worry on a daily basis, even on my days off. I never feel like
I’m done – always another task to do – always responsibility. I worry all the
time. Sometimes, when it’s really bad, I think about going to sleep and never
waking up.

Different Types of Anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental illnesses characterized
by overpowering and long lasting fear, dread, uneasiness,
    apprehension, obsession, compulsions, and unpleasant
physical symptoms, such as sweating, elevated heartbeat,
    shaking or trembling.
These types of conditions impact day to day performance and may make it difficult
or impossible for an individual to hold a job or enjoy a family or social life. They are
the most common mental illnesses in America and are thought to affect at least one
out of every nine people annually. These types of disorders often are bedfellows
for other mental illnesses such as mood and eating disorders.

*
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) – This form is the most common and is
recognized by excessive, constant anxiety and worry about a number of life
problems, such as divorce and finances, for a period of 6 or more months.
GAD may begin in a person’s 20s or 30s or as a childhood overanxious disorder.
Many believe that women are more susceptible to GAD but the statistics don’t
support this premise. The stats show that men and women are equally likely to
have bouts of generalized anxiety disorder and the condition tends to be chronic.

*
Panic disorder – If you were behind schedule getting to airport for the big family
getaway or if you were running late to that all important business meeting you
probably have felt the effects of panic but a panic disorder is something just a
little bit different. The disease is distinguished by unpredictable bouts of extreme
anxiety that seem to start suddenly and peak quickly, usually within 10 minutes.
Unwelcome physical symptoms can include elevated blood pressure and
heartbeat, disorientation, dizziness, numbness, a looming sense of danger,
choking sensations, and a strong desire to escape. Those suffering with the
potentially damaging condition may worry constantly about having another
attack and may change their behavior to avoid situations that think trigger the
bouts of panic. Panic disorder is sometimes accompanied by a serious fear of
public venues (agoraphobia). The disease is more common in women than men,
and it usually begins between adolescence and 35.

*
Phobia – Being deathly afraid of spiders or heights are just a couple of the
common phobias people have. A phobia can be defined as an exaggerated,
extreme, and irrational fear of specific situations or objects. The feared situation
or object varies with the person. Besides the two common phobias listed above
others common phobias would include fear of needles, dogs, knives, getting sick,
and flying. These fears are common in children and are not an indication of any
underlying mental disorder.

*
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) – OCD is distinguished by persistent,
intrusive, and distressing thoughts, images, or impulses that occupy the mind
(obsessions) and by repetitive actions the individual thinks he or she must
perform (compulsions). Typical obsessions include fear of contamination by
dirt, germs, or viruses; extreme need for objects to be in an exact order; elevated
vigilance, such as having 5 locks on the front door or all the windows nailed shut;
and a fear of unlucky numbers. Common compulsions linked to OCD are excessive
hand washing, checking repeatedly to make sure all windows and doors are locked,
or buying 150 cans of chili at a time, just incase the chili makers of the world go on
strike.

*
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – This condition is described as the
immediate response to a traumatic event that evokes intense fear, helplessness,
and horror through flashbacks, or nightmares coupled with avoidance of all things
linked to the event, an increased vigilance and arousal, such as extreme alertness
and difficulty sleeping. This condition is most often associated with soldiers
returning from a war but also can be educed by a traumatic event, natural
disasters, assault, physical abuse, and death.

Herbs Proven to be Effective in Relieving Anxiety Symptoms

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been traditionally used for centuries
to support balanced mood and safely maintain mental wellness and equilibrium.
In recent times, clinical studies have confirmed ancient wisdom and Hypericum is
one of the most widely studied herbs on the market today. Active ingredients
include glycosides, flavonoids, volatile oils, tannins and resins. St. John’s Wort
has also been shown to support stable mood during the menstrual and
premenstrual periods. (Stevinson C, Ernst E. A pilot study of Hypericum
perforatum for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome. British Journal of
Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 2000;107:870-876).

Passionflower: The herb passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) was used as
a folk remedy for anxiety and insomnia.

Two studies involving a total of 198 people examined the effectiveness of
passionflower for anxiety. One study found passionflower to be comparable
to benzodiazepine drugs. There was also improvement in job performance
with passionflower and less drowsiness with passionflower compared with
the drug mexazolam, however, neither was statistically significant.
